If I remember correctly the VAT was around 20% and the import tariffs around 10%. The good news is that the customers in France had to deal with that, not me, and even with the 30% price premium, we were still a lot cheaper than the French domestic price.

On modems, it was more "grey market import" because the modems we were exporting were not approved by France Telecom so I could legally export them, but the buyers were not allowed to use them :) The difference in price between an "approved" modem and a regular modem ranged from 10:1 to 20:1!

Follow up question.....how was France in regards import taxes? Did you slip through on smallish volumes or did you have to go the formal route?

Good stuff Fabby. I like historicals like this. It all gets down to what you love and organic individual growth. Just like Rush Limbaugh says again and again. ( I mention his name because its so fun to hear the groans of the poo-pooer-no-dooers )
