I feel like the entire supporting cast (with the possible exception of his wife) were characters created in his dreams to fill specific emotional voids and/or tactical roles. To me, the lack of emotional connection to the characters was an intentional and brilliant clue that this whole movie is set in his dreams. Dream or not, the movie is worth seeing on the big screen.
