Meetic: The rules of the game have changed

Meetic is now the largest online dating site in the world. With its emphasis on chat and the easiness of getting dates, it has become a societal phenomenon in France. With its acquisitions in the UK, Brazil and China, the publicly traded French company (MEET.PA) now has commending positions in France, the UK and Brazil and a strong position in other Western European countries and China.

I just came across their most recent TV ad campaign and absolutely loved it. Here it is for all of you to enjoy:

For full disclosure, I am not a shareholder in Meetic, but Marc Simoncini, its founder, is a friend of mine.

Great spot! Thanks for the pointer pointing. I wonder why the titles are in French even though the actors speak English.

I think it’s because in France Sex and the City played in English with French subtitles when it came out on one of the premium channels. I might be wrong though, I have not lived there in years…

When is proper free dating coming up ? There is no reason why it cannot be done, there are simple ways to check ID these days. Freemium has hit every other industry, this one should be no exception.

Fred: It’s starting to happen. Do you know plentyoffish.com in Canada?

    Fabrice,

What do you think of Meetic new pricing scheme? Was it the right time to have women pay full membership?

    Fred:

Meetic dominates the French market to such an extent that they expect to lose few women by starting to charge them. I am sure their revenues will drastically increase as Match.com’s revenues did when they started charging women.

However, I don’t think this was the correct long term strategic move. Most dating sites have a skewed male to female ratio. Meetic avoided that by being free for women.

They currently don’t face any real threat from a free site, but should they lose enough women with this move, that might change…
